Leigh Sugar

Leigh Sugar (she/her) is a disabled writer, educator, editor, and learner based in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Her debut poetry collection is FREELAND (Alice James Books, 2025), and she created and edited That’s a Pretty Thing to Call It: Prose and Poetry by Artists Teaching in Carceral Settings (New Village Press, 2023). Leigh holds an MFA in poetry from New York University and an MPA in criminal justice policy from John Jay College. When able, she teaches remote writing workshops, and has taught/facilitated through various schools and organizations including NYU, The Institute for Justice and Opportunity, Hugo House, Poetry Foundation, and more.
