Monica Ikegwu is a Baltimore-based artist who currently studies at the Maryland Institute College of Art. Throughout her art career, she has received a silver portfolio medal from the National Scholastic Art & Writing Awards and bronze and gold medals from the National ACT- SO Competition, and was recently named a 2017 YoungArts Finalist in Visual Arts. Her work depicts a variety of portraiture of African American people as a means of bringing up the social issues that aren’t widely discussed. Alongside portraiture, she explores the combination of 2D and the figure, which creates a juxtaposition that is pleasing to the eye.
