Poems are for the souls of people who want to live their life in a way that exceeds the material world. When you read a poem you feel different from reading a guide on what devices to buy and what the affordable choices are.

Reading a poem makes you feel like you are more than just a body and more than just a mind, it helps you connect with your soul. Yes, it sounds weird, but there are a lot of people who walk around disconnected from their souls. They only live through their mind and body. But if you are reading this, you are most likely connected to your soul.

Writing poems, on the other hand, is an activity that lets your soul connect to the outer world. It is like your feelings desperately try to get out and connect to other people through words.

The moments when a poem comes out in 10 minutes using words that can move even the most cold-hearted person are really rare. That is why some people write hundreds of poems throughout their lifetime but only some of them are really good and reach the hearts of others.

For the times in which your feelings don’t come out using the right words to make a perfect poem, we have made a list of tips that might help you obtain the perfect form for those feelings.

Using images to make your audience see what you feel

Everybody knows that when a salesman uses the word ’imagine’, they will definitely sell something. It is because they create feelings in the potential buyer’s mind. The same is valid when we are talking about poetry. The best way to make your readers connect to the feeling you want to portray is by creating images in their minds.

These images can be introduced by inducing the idea of sight, smell, touch, taste, and even motion. You should know that the brain can play tricks on you. When you read something, especially poetry and fiction, your brain actually makes you feel like you are there, in the middle of all those words, feeling what the words are telling you how to feel.

I can tell you now that the air is so smooth that you can actually feel it’s softness moving like silk on your skin and I have just created an image related to touch. I have created a sensation using your brain’s inability to make a difference between imagination and reality.

Do not force feeling

When trying to portray feelings, it is important not to do that by being too obvious. Due to the advertising industry, people are accustomed to being emotionally manipulated. Therefore, if you want to do the obvious things and get a person in a state of feeling using obvious triggers, think again.

It also depends on what type of poem you want to write. Some people want to portray feelings and others try to talk about an idea that does not involve feelings as much. Therefore, if you get a lot of emotional energy from your readers, that might not pay so much attention to the ideas you want to transmit.

Cliches are not your friends

There are ideas and metaphors that have been used over and over again, so much that they don’t trigger emotion in people. Therefore, try to create an original image, one that will allow you to be able to awaken in the mind of the reader the most appropriate idea or feeling that is related to your message.

Final thoughts

Regardless of the tips we have given you here, usually, the best poem comes out exactly how it is supposed to come out. These poems will never compare to the ones that have been planned or to the ones that have been carefully structured. Therefore, don’t force it. When the perfect poem comes, you will know it is perfect without any editing.
