Frequently Asked Questions

Can you explain the guideline about “sending up to five packets of poetry or prose” further?

Answer: Yes! Each entrant may submit five packets of work for Adroit Prize consideration. Each of these packets may contain either up to six poems or up to three pieces of prose (fiction or creative nonfiction, up to 3,500 total words combined). For example, Student A might wish to send four packets of six poems and one 2,000-word creative nonfiction piece. Student B might wish to send a packet of three flash fiction pieces, three 3,500-word stories (one in each of three packets), and one creative nonfiction piece. And so on!

Are pieces submitted together judged together, or is each piece submitted judged individually?

Answer: Each piece within a packet is judged individually. Your packets do not have to revolve around a character, theme, or voice.

Can I submit previously published/accepted work?

Answer: Depends. You can submit unpublished work, work published by a campus-distributed magazine (for example, a high school or college/university’s campus publication), or work recognized/awarded by say a contest but not published. You cannot submit previously published work in a nationally- or internationally-distributed magazine.

I submitted a piece to the journal recently. Am I allowed to submit the same piece to the contest? What about a different/new piece?

Answer: Yes. You are, in both cases! We look forward to considering your Prize submission(s).

I have poems and pieces of prose to send. Can I send them in the same entry/submission?

Answer: No. Please send up to six poems together in one entry and then you may also send up to three pieces of prose (fiction or creative nonfiction, up to 3,500 total words combined) — or vice versa.

Do you accept pieces that employ other languages in them, or photo essays?

Answer: Yes (x2). We look forward to reading what you’ve got.

If my submission is accepted elsewhere, do I need to withdraw it from Adroit Prize consideration?

Answer: Yes. Please withdraw using the “Messages” tab of Submittable.

Should I withdraw work that is accepted elsewhere while under Adroit Prize consideration?

Answer: Yes. Please withdraw by adding a note to your submission, making sure to use the “Messages” tab of Submittable.

Submission Guidelines

All secondary and undergraduate students are eligible, including international students and students who have graduated a semester early (in this case, in December 2022). Each student may send up to five total submissions across the genres of poetry and prose.

Each poetry submission may include up to six poems (maximum of ten pages single-spaced). Each prose submission may include up to three works of fiction or creative nonfiction (combined word limit of 3,500 words; excerpts are acceptable). For example, you may submit three submissions of up to six poems and two 3,500-word stories, or five submissions of up to six poems, or five stories each less than 3,500 words in length.

Poems and prose pieces included in submissions may be sent to other contests and publications as well, and may have been previously recognized by other organizations and/or featured in campus-wide publications, provided that simultaneously submitted work is acknowledged as such in the cover letter portion of a given submission. If work under consideration is accepted elsewhere, submitters should reach out promptly by adding a note to the corresponding submission on Submittable.

All submitted poems and prose pieces will be considered for publication in the Adroit Journal.

Winners will be awarded $200, and their work—along with the work of runners-up—will be featured in the Adroit Journal. Runners-up and finalists will receive a copy of their judges’ latest book.

To accommodate this while offering free online issues, we have set a non-refundable submission fee of $15. If you require financial assistance, please download this form and follow the instructions.

Please direct any questions to editors@theadroitjournal.org.
