5 Tips to Help You Be a Successful Poet

Writing poetry can feel cathartic, inspiring and enjoyable – but despite this, being a poet can come with challenges. Many poets struggle to find inspiration, while others face the dreaded writer’s block.

Thankfully, it is possible to overcome these issues with a few actionable tips (even if it can seem like an impossible task at the time!). Here are five tips to help you be a successful poet.

Take Notes When You Feel Inspired

Creativity is an essential part of creating great poetry, but sadly creativity is random. It comes and goes as it pleases, and you don’t have much control over this – so if you do feel inspired or creative, jot some notes down. Capture the ideas as they happen, rather than trying to recreate them later. This is fairly simple to do; you just need to make sure that you have a notepad or a smartphone on you at all times, so that you can easily write down your thoughts as they appear.

Tap Into Your Feelings

It can also be beneficial to tap into your feelings when you are writing. Some of the best poetry is emotionally charged, so don’t shy away from your feelings, even if they aren’t positive emotions (such as anger, jealousy or frustration). Writing down these negative feelings can also be cathartic, and this can lead to more compassionate writing in the future.

Write About Something That Matters To You

Passion motivates people, so if you are struggling to write, try writing about something that matters to you. This doesn’t need to be a deep, tough to tackle subjects like love or death; it could be about how you struggle with maths, or it could be about your favorite kind of plant. It doesn’t really matter, so long as it helps you to put pen to paper!

Don’t Constantly Focus On Quality

This may seem counter-intuitive, but don’t worry too much about every piece of writing being good. After all, every poet writes good and bad pieces, and fearing creating bad work can stop you from writing a great poem.

Look for Inspiration

It can also be useful to seek out inspiration if you are feeling uninspired. You could go to an art gallery or a museum, or you could simply go outside; research has found that being outside makes people feel more creative.

Many people also say that traveling to new cities and places provides them with inspiration and motivation. So if you are planning a vacation in the near future, consider going to a unique city that you think will inspire you! And this doesn’t have to be a huge expense; you can save money by booking Exoticca vacation packages to lower the costs. Head to the Exoticca website for the most recent deals.

Be Consistent

It is also important to be consistent with your writing. Your writing, like most other skills, will get better the more you practice it, even if it doesn’t feel like you are improving. Consistency also makes it easier to avoid writer’s block, but don’t overwork yourself; just try to commit to writing something a few times a week.
